Cameras on School Campus??

Posted March 26, 2008

Something happened at one of my kid’s school recently and I wanted to voice my concern. She was in the hall and a young man walked by with his pants sliding down his fanny. There was a teacher standing close by who spoke up with “Excuse me, please pull up your pants.” The young man just kept walking, ignoring the teacher. The teacher said a gain a few times in a firm but level tone, “Excuse me” all the while the student ignored the teacher.

So, according to my daughter, the teacher walked up behind the young man and put their hand on the young man’s shoulder. Not forcefully, but gently in a fashion as to try to get the attention of the student. Suddenly the student threw his books down and started screaming at the teacher, “What in the H%^$ gave you the right to touch me, I didn’t give you permission to touch me, this is sexual harassment.” The entire time the young man was screaming at the teacher.

I asked my daughter what happened? What did the teacher do? She said, “The teacher turned and walked away.” I said the student didn’t get in trouble. She said, “Nope, the teachers are more afraid of getting fired than the students are of getting in trouble.”

This concerns me and I’m not sure there is an easy solution. Clearly this student was wrong. Clearly the teacher was in the right. In today’s day and age of justice and getting down to who is right and who is wrong, absolutely, I think there should be cameras on campus. For the protection of the teachers as well as the students.
