Tech takes care of Blue Devils, clinches Clemson's ACC berth

Posted May 16, 2008

Clemson was already in the state of Florida, but tonight's events ensured the Tigers will hang around the Sunshine State a week longer.

Virginia Tech took care of business for Clemson, vanquishing Duke 8-5 in the teams' ACC game tonight. That clinched Clemson's ACC Tournament berth, assuring the Tigers that they won't be passed by Duke with one ACC game left.

Clemson is the eighth seed and will open ACC Tournament play against top-seeded Miami in a round-robin bracket which will also feature fourth-seeded N.C. State and the fifth seed (either Virginia or Georgia Tech).

This significantly enhances Clemson's shot at an NCAA berth and has to feel sweet for the Tigers, who were furious about April 20's 6-6, 10-inning tie against Duke, which the Blue Devils forged with a dubious rain delay that featured Duke coach Sean McNally telling his team not to put the tarp on the field with a serious rainstorm approaching.
