I'm sitting high above the field here at N.C. State's Carter-Finley Stadium, and two hours from kickoff, this doesn't look like much of a football atmosphere. It's chilly, gray, with some rain in the air - although none is forecast for today, it drizzled all night here.
Brings a foreboding feeling for a game that Clemson is expected to win handily - the Tigers are an eight-point favorite here against a Wolfpack team that is banged-up and bruised on defense.
Last time I felt this way, Clemson dropped a stunner at Maryland. Nuff said.
A couple things to watch:
How will Clemson affect Russell Wilson today? Wilson, an athletic, strong-armed sophomore, is just the latest in a line of top-25 passers that Clemson has faced. The Tigers have excelled against almost all of them - they're 3-1 against top-25 efficiency passers so far, with TCU's Andy Dalton the only victor. Last week, Clemson intercepted Christian Ponder four times and ended his season via a crushing blow from DeAndre McDaniel. He'd been picked off only three times in his first eight games.
Riley Skinner? 97 yards and two interceptions, and, well, you get the idea.
We'll see if Wilson can buck the trend against a secondary with 19 interceptions, tied for the national lead with Iowa.
What about Kyle Parker? Parker has matured as the season has rolled on, but still has a penchant for critical mistakes - a pick-six and fumble return score at Miami, two interceptions against Coastal Carolina and a pick-six against FSU (and another wiped out by an FSU offsides penalty).
N.C. State is going to need defensive points to hang with Clemson's explosive offense, and Parker seems like the most likely source. He's been solid, but must cut out the mistakes.
And what about C.J. Spiller's toe? It's obvious that the toe is hurting Spiller, a legit Heisman Trophy candidate. Spiller pulled up short on several runs last week, and admitted he has been limited in practice for some time, saving his heaviest work for Thursdays. Spiller needs another big day to keep pace in the Heisman race, and State's porous defense seems like the perfect target.
But will Spiller's balky toe let him take advantage?
We shall see.
Check back later on - I'll have updates as the day progresses.
