Well, I'll admit I had some doubts about Clemson's ability to rise above its opponent's level today against NC State, but after 30 minutes, the Tigers are proving me wrong.
Clemson leads the Wolfpack 24-7 at halftime following a solid first 30 minutes. Clemson was virtually unstoppable on offense, with touchdown drives of 75, 57 and 17 yards (the third coming on a C.J. Spiller passing score to Xavier Dye following NC State's shanked punt) and outgained the Wolfies 238-114.
Clemson has converted five of seven third down tries.
Meanwhile, State quarterback Russell Wilson is 4-of-14 for 49 yards, a touchdown and an interception with two sacks, although a rash of drops by his receivers have hurt him.
Spiller's scoring pass displayed his versatility for Heisman voters -he's the first player in Clemson history to score five different ways in a season.
Keep this up, and the Tigers will need only a win over Virginia next week (or a Virginia win over Boston College later today) to wrap up the Atlantic Division title and trip to Tampa for a likely rematch with Georgia Tech, which leads Duke 28-10 at the half up the road in Durham.
So far, so good.
