We scribes had a quick Sunday teleconference with Clemson coach Dabo Swinney to recap Saturday's 43-23 win over N.C. State and look ahead to the home finale against Virginia.
Dabo said the win was the team's "most complete" game on the road, although he was disappointed with defensive penalties - two Brandon Maye penalties extended one Wolfpack drive twice on third down and eventually led to a touchdown.
Offense, of course, brought some smiles: the Tigers had 454 yards of total offense and extended a streak that has seen them score at least 38 points in five straight games (they've won them all and average 42 points during the streak).
Swinney said that left guard Thomas Austin sustained a mid-foot sprain, and likely won't practice Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday - the goal is to "have him out there Thursday." If not, I'd expect Mason Cloy to get the start.
As for Da'Quan Bowers, who has missed the last two weeks with a sprained knee, I'd expect him back this week. Swinney joked Saturday that trainers "had to leave his pads at home" to keep Bowers from playing, and the only question now is how Bowers responds once, in Swinney's words, "he cuts it loose."
That's the most interesting stuff - Swinney played the "respect Virginia, despite the record" card, as you might expect. But I don't think the Cavs will give Clemson any problems Saturday.
More as the week progresses.
