Disco Night at the Joneses'
Posted November 19, 2007
A family with a toddler can find fun in the weirdest places.
Gus and I were in the den tonight when I wandered over to the stereo and popped in a Donna Summer's Greatest Hits CD. It had been a quick-buy thing at CVS, of all places.
I started playing "Hot Stuff" and dancing around like a moron. Pretty soon, Rick appeared at the door.
"Hey you," I said. "Wanna dance?"
Laughing, Rick joined me on the dance floor.
"Come here often?" I said, shaking my groove thing.
"All the time," Rick said. "I come here every night. I've never seen you before. You've got some pretty hot moves."
We were laughing so hard that Gus looked up from his train table and came over to join the party. So there we were, the two of us following Guster's lead through the monkey dance, the elephant, the lion, the crocodile and some wild thing I wouldn't be able to do again if you paid me.
"Hot Stuff" gave way to "Bad Girls" (I never knew Donna was this risque) and we broke out the "Melissa & Doug" instruments. Rick had the maracas, I had the tambourine and drumstick, and Gus went nuts on the cymbals--all to Donna Summer, of all things.
When that song ended, I started putting my instruments away.
"No, Mommy, no!" Gus said. "Play another song!"
Some 80's mix CD was in the stereo already so I hit "play." The Romantics' "What I Like About You" came on. Gus bounced his knees a few times but just wasn't feeling the love.
"No, something else," he said.
Next track was Billy Idol's "Dancing With Myself," a sure hit. Gus was sold. He was doing his air-guitar with one leg up on the chair.
"I'm playing the bass!" he said. Bass? Where did he learn this one?
So we jumped around until I was quite winded and ready to pass out. No, I don't do much for myself these days. I don't go out with friends, Rick and I don't go out for dinner or to movies. But sometimes, on nights like this, I realize that these seemingly simple times that we spend as a family are pretty cool.
I just hope our blinds were closed.
