    Jerry "Drek" Mattison, 16, of Anderson was remembered by family, friends, and community leaders.  He was a tenth grade student at Westside High School, with classmates who came to the altar at King David Baptist Church in Anderson Friday June 27, 2008 to pray together, along with Anderson County Sheriff Deputies and principal Henry Adair.  Drek lost his life in gunfire outside the River Oak Apartments June 22.  Pastor Johnny Goldsmith's Eulogy was Luke 15:14.

    The Piedmont Salkehatchie Summer Service group, similar to many Salkehatchie groups around South Carolina reaching out to rebuild sub-standard homes, worked on homes in Pelzer, Piedmont, and Williamston.   Around 90 teens joined in with adult leadership and upgraded homes in an effort to make them warmer, safer, and drier.   A program of the South Carolina United Methodist Conference, the group spent the week of June 21-28, with time for work, eating food from Latimer Memorial UMC in Belton, and prayer.

    Anderson County fire volunteers from Broadway, Whitefield, Hopewell, and Centerville were quick to contain a field fire across the street from Cobb's Glen subdivision on Old Williamston Road in Anderson Thursday afternoon.  Chief Billy Gibson said the firefighters contained the field quickly and were keeping the fire from reaching nearby subdivisions Wood Pointe and Cobb's Glen.

    Charles Free grew up in Anderson, watched his father repair brass and copper radiators in the horse and buggy days, but decided to sell ice cream.   Sixteen years after that, he decided to get his hands into what he knew about all along, the family business of fixing radiators.   Retired in 2002, Mr. Free said the business is in the family hands of Scott King, and talks about replacing light and thin radiators of newer cars.
