BOILING SPRINGS Lunch ladies Lynn Bray, Knedra Rhinehart, Ann Wolfe, Susan Camp and Wanda Barrett will be finding a lot of reasons to take out the trash this week.
Let me let you in on a little secret. The best place to see George Clooney while he’s filming “Leatherheads” on the Boiling Springs Ninth Grade campus just might be the Dumpster next to the cafeteria.
Tuesday morning, several people who had different vantage points spotted Mr. Clooney on the Boiling Springs football field in a burnt orange Leatherheads football uniform with the No. 7 across his chest. In the film, Mr. Clooney plays Dodge Connelly, an “aging football hero who convinces a college football star to join him in the ragtag pro league beginning to catch on in America during the 1920s.”
We couldn’t confirm this, but the Academy Award winner’s trailer is said to be back behind the cafeteria, merely a few feet away from the lunch ladies’ back door. The ladies found this out by talking to one of the production drivers who is from the area.
You could say these ladies have the inside scoop, the dish, and they were more than willing to spill the beans about People magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive.”
“The actors walk back and forth,” said Ms. Camp, who has been taking photographs of the action every day. “They come from over there and come down here.”
That’s why the women have been finding plenty of reasons to take milk cartons and tray after tray of food out to the Dumpster. The cafeteria’s back kitchen door is like a backstage access to a Hollywood set. By the Dumpster Tuesday morning, they could witness male and female crewmembers with walkie-talkies strapped to their belts with headsets on their heads milling around the front of the “Duluth (Minn.) Field” set.
In front of the field, which was hidden behind a huge wooden fence, were several clothes racks, which were covered in plastic, and an old-fashioned bicycle.
Security kept us close enough to see but far enough away so we wouldn’t make fools of ourselves. A female crewmember rushed by with a stack of paper cups. Maybe Mr. Clooney needed coffee STAT. That’s if he’s still using his “E.R.” lingo to impress the ladies.
The best view from the cafeteria is from the window on the far left side of the building. From here, cafeteria staff, teachers and students can see a real live movie trailer with California license plates.
One leatherhead in an old-timey football uniform walked onto the field while we were looking out the window. Another man was dressed in a long coat and hat reminiscent of the fashion of the 1920s. Were they stars or extras? Your guess is as good as mine.
Bottled water, crates with apples, bananas and oranges sat on the ground by the trailer. Mr. Clooney must have quite an appetite and a thirst to quench.
Jimmy Fuqua, the school’s resource officer, met Mr. Clooney a couple of weeks ago when he was in town to check out the field. Mr. Fuqua was also one of the people who spotted Mr. Clooney in uniform Tuesday morning.
“He just came right up to us and talked to us,” he said about their first encounter. “He was very nice, personable.
“They said he’s been going in and out of the trailer on the other side of the building,” Ms. Camp added.
Ms. Camp and Ms. Wolfe said they spotted Mr. Clooney on the football field two weeks ago, but he was too far away for a quick “Hello.” Ms. Wolfe did have the distinct honor of having Mr. Clooney walk by her vehicle. She still didn’t meet him.
“He had an entourage, and I wasn’t about to bust that up,” she said.
Ms. Camp said the best time to see any action is at 6:25 a.m. when she’s driving into work.
“They have a tractor-trailer with all the costumes, and people are lined up to get their costumes,” she said.
The women are already cooking up a Valentine’s Day surprise for Mr. Clooney. You see, the poor guy has to work on Valentine’s Day. Aren’t there labor laws?
The sign, which they will make out of a bed sheet will read, “Happy Valentine’s Day George Clooney and the Leatherheads.”
“They’re going to be out here working on Valentine’s Day,” Ms. Wolfe said. “We’re hoping they will come and give us a visit.”
We hope so, too.
