GREAT FALLS Great Falls coach Ken Schofield described his team’s play as sloppy and not focused. That is something you will seldom hear from a coach whose team won a first-round Class A Division II playoff game 41-7.
Most of the time, teams don’t win when they turn the ball over six times and accumulate 11 penalties for 95 yards.
The Red Devils got off to a quick start as Terrence Jeter returned a punt 41 yards to make it 6-0.
The costliest of Great Falls’ four lost fumbles led to Dixie’s only score.
Yavario Smith stripped Red Devils quarterback Gaither Bumgartner as he was fighting for extra yards, and then Smith streaked down the sideline 74 yards to make it 7-6 Hornets.
“It was a physical game, and we won that battle,” Schofield said. “When a two seed meets a seven, you expect this kind of score.”
Great Falls killed three second quarter drives with fumbles near midfield, but the Hornets couldn’t do anything with them. The Red Devils’ defense had five sacks and forced three turnovers of their own.
Great Falls had their best drive of the first half mid way through the second quarter. Cedric Spence scored from 3 yards out to make it 14-7. Dixie had a chance to close the gap just before the half, but failed on fourth down inside the Red Devils’ 10.
