Anderson’s Patrick Rada shot a sizzling 69 on the final day of the South Carolina Golf Association Amateur Championship, but so did Greenville’s Lee Palms — and for Palms, it was enough to claim the title and Musgrove Mill Golf Club in Clinton.
Palms had weekend rounds of 67-69 for a final score of 283, one stroke better than both Josh Gallman and Will Oldham, who tied for second.
Rada, who plays collegiately at South Carolina, had a four-day total of 288 which was good for a fifth place tie.
Palms, a member of Greenville Country Club, started the day two shots behind the third round leader Gallman. Knowing the challenge in front of him, he came out firing making birdies on the first two out of three holes. Bogies on holes No. 4 and 7 were offset by another birdie on the par four No. 5 to give the Greenville resident a front nine score of 35.
The back nine was more of an adventure for the Palms, who bogeyed No. 10 followed by birdies on 11, 13, 14 and 16. Going into the 229 yard par three 17th, Palms held a two shot lead over Oldham and Gallman, who were following in the last group. After an up and down par 3 on 17 and an errant tee shot on 18, Palms lipped out a par put to make bogey and finish at five under par 283.
This is the second SCGA Major Championship Lee Palms has won at Musgrove Mill. He also won the 2003 Mid Amateur with a three day score of 214.
There area golfers who competed were Michael Sims, Clemson, 295; Robert Godfrey, Seneca, 297; Allen Koon, Anderson, 297; Casey Smith, Abbeville, 300; Drew Ernst, Seneca, 302; and Jordan Byrd, Pendleton, 309.
