Anderson County Transportation Committee agrees to fixes on some area roads

STORY TOOLS

— The Anderson County Transportation Committee approved more than $900,000 to fix area roads during its latest meeting earlier this week.

Two road projects, the Pelzer Avenue Relocation project and Rice Cemetery Road, were left to be discussed at the group’s next meeting.

Among the approved projects were Woodson Road, at a cost of $131,000, South Academy Street at $230,500, medians in Iva, and flashing lights for the Williford Fire Department, said Holt Hopkins, Anderson County transportation director.

The committee voted not to work on roads in Sadlers Creek State Park.

Additionally, the committee voted to accept a state matching money program for $261,000 that would pave the state secondary roads 273, 993 and 1191. The county will pay $303,699 to fix those roads. Money for the roads comes from the state’s gasoline tax and is earmarked for secondary, farm-to-market and local roads, Hopkins said. That represents in Anderson County about $3 million per year.

That money is kept in a separate account, which draws interest to pay for additional road repairs, he said. The committee is scheduled to meet again on Oct. 13.
