Interstate work to delay Clemson-Alabama game traffic

STORY TOOLS

Attention Clemson football fans: Expect delays along Interstates 85 and 75, just in time for the Alabama game on Labor Day weekend.

The Georgia Department of Transportation is letting drivers know there will be a major reconstruction project underway at the spot where I-85 and I-75 intersect.

“This construction will cause heavy traffic delays on the interstate and in the area immediately surrounding the Georgia Dome,” the Georgia DOT said in a statement. Clemson plays Alabama on Aug. 30.

Starting at 9 p.m., Aug. 29, I-85 southbound will be reduced to two lanes near its merge point with I-75 and I-75 will be reduced to one lane, according to the DOT.

The work will continue until 5 a.m., Sept. 2.

“Extremely heavy congestion is anticipated on both I-85 and I-75 southbound north of and through downtown Atlanta,” according to the DOT. Traffic tie-ups could last two or more hours, according to a DOT statement.

If you are traveling from South Carolina on I-85, DOT officials suggest taking I-385 East to I-20 West for access to the Georgia Dome and downtown hotels.

Visitors staying in hotels in the Dunwoody/Perimeter area, Buckhead, Midtown and downtown should use Atlanta’s transit system to travel to the game, said Metro Atlanta District Engineer Bryant Poole.

The project is necessary to complete a complicated lane shift and reconfiguration of the portion of I-75/85 that passes through Midtown Atlanta, according to the DOT.

Travelers can call 511 for updated construction information. Information also is available at www.511ga.org.

why in the world would ANYBODY schedule something like this - during the busiest traveled holiday weekend during the year - not counting this ballgame. GREAT PLANNING !!!!!!!!!!

Not to mention that there is a HUGE sci-fi convention in Atlanta this weekend. With more than 75,000 people plus the football fans, and Nascar next year, Atlanta will be full up on the Labor Day Weekend fun. What a joke. GA DOT needs some new ideas.
