Martin, Hanna air it out at football jamboree

— So much for Dajun Martin the running quarterback. T.L. Hanna’s sophomore quarterback, in his first season starting, aired it out Saturday night to his two high-profile receivers.

Hanna, in what could be some regular season foreshadowing, beat Belton-Honea Path 13-7 in the Anderson County Jamboree on the strength of two big passing plays to Quinton Payton and Martavis Bryant.

Payton answered an 80-yard B-HP scoring drive with a 49-yard strike down the left sideline, then Bryant added a 20-yard touchdown reception at the other end.

Could this be what Yellow Jacket fans can expect from the two receivers who are committed to ACC schools?

“It is if they play us the way (B-HP) did,” Hanna coach Kenya Fouch said. “Which is probably the way I would do it too. You put people in the box, and make them throw.”

Making Martin throw this season should be a popular defense against Hanna. And Fouch said his young QB showed poise for his age in the face of that defense.

“He shows his talent, especially for his age,” Fouch said. “He’s a good athlete, and I know he wants to take off running, but he doesn’t, he fights the urge and sits in the pocket and delivers a nice ball.”

Bears coach Wayne Green was pleased with his team’s improved effort over earlier scrimmages and jamborees.

“We played with a greater sense of urgency,” Green said. “We played together much better.”

But, he was also disappointed that the Bears couldn’t take advantage of three big plays on their end, and suffered at least two on defense.

“I think a lot of that has to do with youth, and it’s something we can coach and get better at,” he said.

One positive was the return of junior Jacob Tavernier, who was recently cleared to play after suffering a separated shoulder. Tavernier will be counted on to play nearly every down this season at free safety and running back.

“I need to get in a little better shape,” Tavernier said, “because I was breathing pretty hard.”

Hanna has its share of injuries, which is becoming a theme for area teams. Linebackers Jake Nicolopulos and Joey Farmer were held out, and won’t return until the season opener at Westside.

But no other team has more injuries to key players than Westside, which has already lost star defensive back Lex Butler for the season.

The Rams held out at least six players, but coach Ted Luckadoo didn’t use it as an excuse in his team’s 17-0 loss to Pendleton.

“We didn’t do a good job coaching tonight,” Luckadoo said. “We didn’t do a good job of nothing, really. We didn’t line up right. We didn’t run the right routes, we didn’t block the right people, we didn’t throw the ball very well. Not a good night.”

Westside missed linebacker Jon Adger, safety Chazz Martin, guard Sterling Ward, and punter Matthew Garvin to injuries, and linebacker Cody Queen to a death in the family.

One of the highlights of the night came from Pendleton senior Zachary Sears, who put an exclamation point on the victory with a 49-yard field goal, perhaps hoping to impress Luckadoo, this year’s Shrine Bowl coach.

Bulldogs coach Paul Sutherland said Sears can squat 400 pounds and is as athletic as any player on the team. Although Sutherland didn’t have an exact yardage on Sears’ range, the 49-yarder cleared the cross bar by about 10 yards.

Pendleton moved the ball consistently behind senior quarterback John Michael Gibson senior receiver C.J. Gleaton, and junior running back Reggie Earle.

While looking for more consistency from his squad, Sutherland knows the four key players Saturday night will have a big impact on the season.

“They’ve accepted the role,” he said, “and they know we’ll go as far as they take us.”

One night after junior Sidney Rhodes put on a show to beat West-Oak, the Wren quarterback shined again to beat Crescent 21-7.

Rhodes was 8-for-10 passing for 129 yards and a touchdown.

Crescent and Wren are the only county teams to play next week in Week 0. Crescent plays host to McCormick, while Wren welcomes Southside.

Crescent coach Troy Gamble was pleased his team could move the ball for two drives of at least nine plays. But, before the Tigers scored late, the two long drives ended with a fumble and a sack.

“We’ve just got to eliminate mistakes,” Gamble said. “With our skill and ability, we can’t afford to put the ball on the ground.”

Palmetto finished the jamboree with a 20-19 loss to Greer. Senior Stacey Mosley scored two touchdowns for the Mustangs. Greer was a late addition to the schedule after it was cleared of an illegal practice by the S.C. High School League. Greer’s insertion meant no team had to play twice, which is usually the format.
