I was reading the July 26 story about the old Orr Mill Cemetery near the Kroger Bakery.
In 1885, the C & WC Railroad built a trestle in that area. Orr Mill was built in 1898 and a few poor mill workers were buried in the corner near the railroad. The Orr Mill baseball field was where the Kroger Bakery is now. The cemetery is in the city and Mr. Craig Callaham said they inherited it.
Over a year ago, I took information to Mr. John Moore about a cemetery that is in the city and is in an abandoned condition. He said he would let the city attorney check out the new cemetery laws that I took to him.
This cemetery has 51 tombstones in it and is located across the road from Concord Baptist Church. It’s on the old Alexander Moorhead Plantation and is fenced.
South Carolina passed a 2003 law that pertains to the preservation and protection of cemeteries. It is Code of Laws, Title 6 Chapter 1, General Provisions Article One, Section 6-1-35: (A) Counties and cities are authorized to preserve and protect a cemetery located within its jurisdiction that they determine has been abandoned or is not being maintained and are authorized to expend public funds and use county or municipal inmate labor in the manner authorized by law in connection with the cemetery.
South Carolina will help preserve the memories of past loved ones and you have the backing of the S.C. Attorney General’s office.
