Desperate Houswives is one of many DVDs coming out this week.

STORY TOOLS

Wow. Next week is rather lackluster in terms of new DVD releases. But here’s a few that you may enjoy, including an under-the-radar comedy, the return of Bette Midler and an animated Marvel Comics feature.

John C. Reilly (recently seen in “Step Brothers”) and Sean William Scott (Stifler of “American Pie” fame) match wits in the office comedy “The Promotion”(Weinstein Company, $24.99 SRP, R), about two junior managers at a Chicago grocery store who vie for a coveted promotion while their wives and their co-workers can only stand back and watch how far the one-upmanship will go to get the job done. The DVD features commentary from writer/director Steve Conrad, deleted scenes, and a making-of featurette.

Helen Hunt directs the dramatic comedy “Then She Found Me” (THINKfilm, $24.99 SRP, R), a smart, funny drama about love and destiny. Desperate to start a family, schoolteacher April Epner (Hunt) is thrown into confusion when she is unexpectedly abandoned by her husband (Matthew Broderick). She gets another shock when she meets her unusual birth mother (the divine Bette Midler), a self-centered talk show host who’s not exactly the ideal mom. At first she rejects her but then she begins to find her life opening up in ways she had never imagined. Special features include director’s commentary, cast interviews, and behind the scenes footage.

Marvel Animation Studios gives us the new feature “Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow” (Lionsgate, $19.99 SRP, PG), sure to thrill the kids (and the kids-at-heart) with its exciting action packed story featuring kid versions of your favorite Marvel superheroes. The DVD includes several special features, including a making-of segment and a first look at two upcoming animated films featuring Marvel favorites Wolverine and The Hulk. If it’s anything like previous Marvel animated outings, we should be in for a good time.

My “Cult Pick Of The Week” is the seasonal favorite “It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown” (Warner Home Video, $22.99 SRP, Not Rated), a re-release deluxe version that includes the documentary “We Need A Blockbuster, Charlie Brown,” a featurette focusing on the myth and tradition of the Halloween staple classic Peanuts cartoon.

n Other notable releases for next week include “The Office” Season 4 set (Universal Studios, $30.99 SRP, Not Rated), “Desperate Housewives: The Complete Fourth Season” (Buena Vista Home Entertainment, $38.99 SRP, Not Rated), and “The Married Life”(Sony Pictures, $28.99 SRP, PG-13), starring Pierce Brosnan.
