I read with some dismay the letter in the Aug. 23 Independent-Mail in support of Kevin Bryant.
What distressed me so was that it was based on the stereotypes of the two political parties that have so polarized our country. To broadly categorize Republicans as Christian and protecting the Constitution and Democrats as Anti-Christians and set to pervert the Constitution is terribly inappropriate.
I know many Democrats who are as devout in their Christian faith as anyone I’ve ever known. I can also cite many instances of public doctrine espoused by Republicans that I believe Jesus would not approve of. I also reject the allegations that Democrats are bent on destroying the Constitution.
There is much room for disagreement of what the Constitution specifically calls for. It is a basic framework for our government, not a precise item-by-item cookbook.
We can all have our say in what senator best represents our views, but I’d ask any thinking person to go beyond only whether there is a D or R behind his/her name.
I’ve seen nothing that would indicate that Dr. Meadors is not Christian or would make a mockery of our Constitution. All of what I’ve seen is his genuine desire to improve education, health care, the environment and responsible economic development.
I believe his goals and methods would fall well within constitutional principles and meet with Christ’s approval.
