STORY TOOLS

— The Anderson Senior Follies production always has song and dance and music and fun. It always has humor and drama and, of course, as the name trumpets, senior performers.

But one thing that had been missing for the production’s 19 years was showing the audience just what it meant to grow older.

Director Annette Cantrell Martin has rectified that with this year’s follies.

“This is something we have never done before,” Ms. Martin said. “It’s called ‘Senior Moments’ and it revolves around the fun and rewards of being a senior. It’s easily the funniest thing we have ever done.”

For nearly two decades, Senior Follies has been a hot annual ticket in Anderson and elsewhere. The group has traveled the country, performing in theaters and on television, from “Good Morning America” to “The Today Show” to Charleston’s Piccolo Spoleto Festival.

But every year, the troupe makes Anderson home, and every year the show sells out.

This year, seven shows are planned over two weekends, starting Friday. Ms. Martin said that is 7,700 seats, and at press time only 300 or so were still available. It’s rare for a community theater production to garner so much attention and popularity, but there is only one Senior Follies.

“It’s exhilarating to think that that many people want to see our show,” Ms. Martin said.

The show runs at 8 p.m. Friday, Saturday and March 7-8 and 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and March 8-9. Tickets are $12 each and available through the Rainey Fine Arts Center box office at Anderson University.

Proceeds from the production go to future shows and to renovations of Henderson Auditorium at Anderson U.

“These are your neighbors and friends out there, and the life they breathe on stage becomes new breath of life for the audience,” Ms. Martin said. “It’s personal and something you can’t get anywhere else.”
