Tea room to open in The Chiquola

STORY TOOLS

— If you’re not one for hot tea, Trevor and Tracy Furlong want to covert you.

Within the next two months, the couple plans to open an English tearoom in downtown Anderson at Whitner and Main streets on the first floor of The Chiquola. Their vision for The Victoria is a flashback to 1930s and ’40s England with crisp linens, proper china, 50 kinds of tea and period uniforms.

The Victoria is a dream the couple has shared for years. After meeting online, Tracy, a Williamston native, moved to England in 1999. A year later they were married, and as they traveled with their band, the Furlongs passed the time imagining their tearoom. A settlement on Trevor’s house finally gave the couple the ability to make it happen.

The Victoria’s menu is one page of food and two to three pages of drinks. They will offer iced tea in addition to hot tea, but no coffee. One tea, The Victoria, has been commissioned especially for the restaurant. Other are more personal, such as the chai recipe Tracy received from a close friend’s mother before leaving England.

“We want to put a little bit of our heart and soul into what we’re selling, because we love it so much,” she said.

The Furlongs talk tea like a sommelier talks wine. They took classes with author Jane Pettigrew and master tea taster and buyer Tim Clifton. Tracy’s eyes light up as she describes the flavors and histories behind the teas in her cabinet.

At The Victoria, they plan to offer their own tea tasting and blending sessions.

“We want people to try a tea and enjoy it,” she said. “If you get a pot of tea you don’t like, we’ll find you a tea you do like.”

The tearoom has a natural customer base among Red Hat groups, bridal parties and mother-daughter outings. But the Furlongs also hope to attract businessmen and residents looking for a break from the every day.

They can do fancy, but the pair said they don’t want customers to feel like they have to sip with a pinky in the air.

“We just want to make tea fun,” Trevor said.

Fantastic!!!! I am so looking forward to this place opening. I don't live in Anderson but I was born there and I visit often. Having spent the last 25 years living in Australia, I LOVE a good cup of hot tea. It will be a refreshing change to the ever present coffee shops. The choice of location will lend ambiance to the whole tradition of "taking tea". Congratulations to this couple for bringing style and elegance into this community.

I plan on retiring to Anderson in a year or so & I will probably be your best customer. More than 16 trips to London turned me into an avid (hot) tea drinker.

Best of luck with your venture & please save me a table!

Good luck! Hope you survive your rent!
