STORY TOOLS

Although it may seem odd to go out in Anderson on a Sunday and enjoy live music and drinks, this weekend may be the time to do it. Apparently, it’s a lot like going out on Friday or Saturday, but instead it’s Sunday. Don’t worry, you should be able to adjust in a matter of minutes.

Russ O’Brien has performed regularly every Sunday night at Fin-N-Filet for weeks, and he will be there for at least a couple more months. O’Brien will appear again at Fin-N-Filet this Sunday.

A native of Baton Rouge, La., O’Brien moved to Anderson with his wife recently and only performs solo because he is new to the area. O’Brien started playing with friends in Baton Rouge at a young age, but not for the normal reasons.

“I played high school football and I realized that wasn’t going to always be the best way to meet girls,” O’Brien said, “I had to find a new avenue so that’s why I started playing music.”

O’Brien plays mostly covers at his shows, but has several originals. He said he goes through periods of writing many originals at once, and he hopes to have several more by the end of the year.

O’Brien separates himself from the pack by writing on keys but performing on acoustic guitar. According to him, this method of writing frees him up when the songs are transferred acoustically.

“I perform an acoustic, rock sound with jazz phrasing,” he said, “I didn’t realize it at first, but I was extremely influenced by the music in Louisiana. You can’t go anywhere without hearing jazz or blues, and they really come out in my music.”

The set list at a Russ O’Brien show can vary from night to night, but there are several musicians that he covers frequently. He says people can always expect to hear songs from Eric Clapton, Dave Matthews Band and Jason Mraz.

As far as his originals go, O’Brien points out “Colors” and “Tonight” as two standout songs. He said both are good examples of where he came from musically and feature his signature combination of folk sounds technically grounded in jazz.

O’Brien said he enjoys playing Fin-N-Filet, mainly for the crowds. He has started to attain a regular following there and he said people usually enjoy the relaxed, mellow atmosphere when he plays. However, Russ also stated that if the crowd is inclined he can make the show much more energetic just to make people happy.

“I will play my songs every night, but I can change the entire set depending on the crowd,” O’Brien said, “If I see the 35 and up crowd, I’ll play the Eagles; if I see cowboy hats in the crowd I’ve got to go with Toby Keith.”
