All too often, we don’t go somewhere new or different because we don’t know what to expect. That is where this new feature, “Let’s Do Lunch,” comes in. Each week, we will highlight a different spot for lunch that you can try. We will tell you about prices, atmosphere and anything else you need to know before showing up and chowing down.
And if you have a place we should go, don’t hesitate to drop a line. It’s always lunchtime around here.
The Sweetery, 1814 E. Greenville St., Anderson; 864.224.8394
Hours: M-F 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Yet another spot you might not think of for lunch that will most certainly surprise you.
Just down S.C. 81 going toward the Interstate, a tiny little bakery known as The Sweetery sits unassuming. Even going inside evokes memories of grandma making cookies in the kitchen or birthdays with homemade cakes.
But look to the right as you walk in and on either side of their big board are menu items for just about any lunch sandwich you want. The Rueben, the Philly Steak, the Hero; it’s all there for the eating.
Getting there around noon you will find it challenging to park because the lot is small and sometimes the people parking get a little impatient to get in for the grub. And once you get in, take a look at the menu and choose. The choices aren’t overwhelming and they have sandwiches, salads and soups every day.
Also, don’t forget to check out the chalkboards with the specials of the day or the week. There are some hidden gems inside these specials and ones you won’t want to miss.
For this, I went with the classic Club sandwich. A double-stacked sammy, the Club is ham or turkey with provolone, bacon, tomato, lettuce and mayo. But what makes this sandwich stand out is a dollop of sweet honey mustard that lets the lunch sing.
Served with a small bag of chips, a pickle and a small slice of cake for dessert, you get everything for right around $7. Some of the lighter sandwiches are a buck or so less and their fresh baked bread features everything from wheat and rye to Pumpernickel and croissants.
Have a seat, wait for your number to be called and, if you want to eat there, make sure you make it clear. They usually assume you need to get in and out for your lunch hour.
