Elbert County sheriff wins primary

— Incumbent Elbert County Sheriff Barry L. Haston beat challenger Melvin Andrews -- for a third time -- with 57.6 percent of the votes in a Democratic primary Tuesday.

Haston won by 1,476 votes to 1,087 votes, or 42.4 percent of the vote, for Andrews, according to unofficial vote totals.

Haston, 50, and Andrews, 53, both were contenders for the position in 2000 and again in 2004, with Haston winning both times.

Vote totals are to be certified later this week.

In the race for County Board of Commissioners District 3 seat, also on the Democratic ticket, Mario Dunn beat incumbent Timothy R. Case with 51 percent of the votes.

Dunn won 311 votes to 299 for Case.

Dunn will face Republican Frank H. Eaves in the general election in November for the position.

Voter turnout in the county was light for the day, with 30.74 percent of the county’s 10,628 voters, or 3,267 voters, casting ballots.

County residents also voted in favor of a referendum regarding Elbert County adopting and implement a zoning plan.

The vote was 1,851, or 60.6 percent, in favor of referendum passage and 1,206 against the referendum.

More than 800 Democrats and nearly 200 Republicans had cast their votes as of Monday via absentee ballot or electronic early voting, according to Mae Davis, chief registrar for the county.
