Voter turnout is low in Hart and Stephens counties so far this morning, but elections officials hope to see voting numbers increase.

At Precinct 2 in the city of Hartwell Tuesday morning, a poll worker said 289 people had voted by 10:30.

“That’s low,” the poll worker said. “But this is a primary, and you don’t get a lot of voters in a primary.”

Announcers on local radio stations had been on the air all morning urging people to vote, she said.

In Stephens County, 562 people had voted by 10:45, Diane Whitaker, a county clerk said.

The Registrar’s Office conducts hourly counts in Stephens County, and by 11 a.m., 4.26 percent of voters had come to vote.

By Friday afternoon, 15.7 percent had cast absentee or advance ballots, so the turnout had actually reached about 20 percent, Whitaker said.

“We were hoping for more voters this time, especially because we have some local races with interest,” Whitaker said. “We have a sheriff’s race, a clerk of court race and tax commission seats to be filled, so we thought there would be more participation from voters.”

Polls close at 7 p.m.
