High school field house will be ready for new school year in Stephens County

STORY TOOLS

— The addition to the Stephens County High School field house will be ready to open on the first day of school for the coming academic year, Aug. 14, according to officials.

The addition should be finished Aug. 1, and despite a change to the design plans, it is just slightly over budget, said Brenda Kelley, planning, operations and policy director for Stephens County School System.

The original estimate on the addition, which is 60 feet by 78 feet, was $150,000. Costs now are $3,000 over that estimate, Kelley said.

The state fire marshal required a firewall be installed because the construction is an addition to the current building, Kelley said.

The decision to build the addition came after school system authorities realized the current weight room and wrestling building would need to be taken down to make room for construction on the new high school. After weighing several options, the County Board of Education decided building an addition was the most cost-effective way to house wrestling and a weight room during and after the construction period.
