Tractor-trailers collide on interstate in Oconee County early Thursday

Interstate 85 collision causes diesel fuel spill, no injuries

STORY TOOLS

— Two tractor-trailers collided early Thursday morning on Interstate 85 between exits 1 and 2, causing a small diesel fuel spill but no injuries to either driver.

The Fair Play Fire Department and Oakway Rescue Squad responded to the wreck between the two 18-wheelers that both were traveling northbound on the interstate at 1:15 a.m. Thursday. Fair Play Fire Chief Larry Wilkerson said the cause of the accident was unknown as of Thursday afternoon, but one tractor-trailer ran into the back of the other, causing the diesel spill from the latter truck and significant damage to the cab of the former.

Both drivers were in good condition and were not transported to any hospital, Wilkerson said.

“It was actually pretty miraculous,” he said.

One truck ended up tangled in the median wire, which kept it from going on the southbound side of the interstate. The other truck was able to safely pull to the side of the road out of traffic, according to a Fair Play Fire Department news release. One northbound lane was blocked for three hours, but due to light traffic at that time of morning, no backup occurred, according to the release.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is still investigating the incident.
