With one obstacle cleared in their path to a college baseball championship, the Georgia Bulldogs spent Sunday preparing for another as David Perno’s team squares off with Stanford today at 7 p.m. at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Neb.

The game will be televised live on ESPN2.

UGA worked out for an hour at Creighton University, then had a two-hour visit to the Omaha Home for Boys. Perno said the Father’s Day trip to meet the underprivileged children was a nice break from the business at hand.

“We had a great time visiting with the kids there, and our team got a chance to get know them a little bit,” Perno said. “It’s always good to have an opportunity try and make a positive impact on young people’s lives. The College World Series experience is more than just baseball, and I’m glad we’re able to give something back to the community here in Omaha.”

The Bulldogs (42-23-1) had a day to enjoy their 7-4 victory over top-ranked Miami, but the nation’s No. 6 squad will put that win in the rearview mirror once the Cardinal crosses the white lines this evening.

Nick Montgomery will get the start against Stanford (40-22-2). He sports a 4.06 ERA and 4-2 record. In 57.2 innings on the hill he has allowed 51 hits and 27 runs.

“Stanford is playing very well right now, and they have always been a well-coached team,” Perno said. “I remember they were winning national championships when I was playing. We’re looking forward to the challenge, and our guys know what’s at stake. Our veterans have done a nice job especially with the young guys in making sure we do what we’ve done all year.”
