All too often, we don’t go somewhere new or different, because we don’t know what to expect. That is where this feature, “Let’s Do Lunch,” comes in. Each week, we will highlight a different spot for lunch that you can try. We will tell you about prices, atmosphere and anything else you need to know before showing up and chowing down.
And if you have a place we should go, don’t hesitate to drop a line. It’s always lunchtime around here.
Palmetto Grill
3823 S.C. 81, Anderson; 864.760.0192
Hours: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4:30 to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday; 4:30 to 10 p.m. Saturday; 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.
Though only open for five weeks, Palmetto Grill in Anderson has made quite an impression. Many people already have eaten the evolving fare at the new steak, seafood and pasta restaurant, and it has been suggested a handful of times as a “Let’s Do Lunch” feature.
So it was time to see what was up with Anderson’s newest restaurant.
Palmetto Grill is a casual, yet sophisticated, lunch spot. The location is out of the way, situated just across from Bloom on S.C. 81. The restaurant is separated into a dining area and a bar area. Being just one person for lunch, I went to the bar, and it was quite nice.
The bar is open and airy, and it allows a lot of light to come in around the lunch hour. But it’s not ambiance that makes a good lunch spot, but food and prices.
They offer up eclectic appetizers such as calamari, oysters and even baby back ribs. Their salads are unique, and the lunch entrees include grouper, blackened tilapia and stir-fried veggies. For me, lunch is for sandwiches, and the shaved prime-rib sandwich filled it up.
A simple sandwich with cheese, caramelized onions and, of course, prime rib, it was cooked perfectly and put between ciabatta bread. The only thing that makes eating it tough is the fact that the containers for the au jus is too small to dip the mammoth sandwich in.
The rest of the lunch options range from $7 to $11, and they have a wide range of daily pasta specials at lunch as well as dinner.
But don’t go too late. Lunch is served until 2 p.m. Then the restaurant closes for a couple of hours to prepare for dinner service.

I had been wanting to try this restuarant for a while so after church this past Sunday we invited 3 other families to go with us. I walked in, the lady at the counter asked how many and I said 15. She said, you're kidding right? That should have been the red flag that I needed but said yes, party of 15 but it's three different families and we can be split up and maybe sit side by side, no big deal. The hostess said she would place us in the back, I said ok. A few moments passed and we were seated. It took our server over 15 minutes to acknowledge us, then he took our drink order and disappeared for 10 more minutes though we noticed him serving other customers. We were trying to be patient with the size of our party and the restuarant being newly opened, think the guy was overwhelmed. Anyway, once a different server noticed us sitting there, he realized what was going on, he then picked up our drinks, they were sittng in the kitchen and he brought them over. Long story short, food was blah, service was poor and the mgr charged me twice for the bill, never even apologized. She told me to call my bank though the bank is not the one that gave us VERY poor service nor charged my card twice. I am really disappointed with this restuarant, though I'm sure others may have a pleasant experience while dining there, I was even more disappointed when I found out the hostess that questioned my party of 15 was actually the mgr that charged my card twice.
Why is it that if a restaurant charges customers twice it is up to them to go through their bank to get it eventually corrected? Recently we had that problem. Why can't they just credit your account? When an error is made on a store's receipt they correct it right there.
Thanks for the heads up on your experiences aeclark.
I WAS SO HAPPY A NEW RESTUARANT WAS COMING TO 81 SINCE THAT IS MY NEIGHBORHOOD.I WENT AND TRIED IT AND WAS NOT WILLING TO GO AGAIN. THE FOOD WAS NOT GOOD AND A BIT EXPENSIVE. SMOKEHOUSE ON 81 YOU HAVE NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT UNLESS THEY MAKE SOME CHANGES I DON'T SEE THEM LASTING TO LONG.... A VERY UNSATISFIED PATRON
I've heard the same things, poor service, very overpriced and not good value. It's a shame, I was excited to see it come to 81.

I was excited too until I tried it. Our entrees came out before our salad (which they charge extra) and the service was not up to par. I will give it a little time and try it one more time. Who knows, maybe things will improve.
I'm reading these comments a little late, but I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought the food and service at Palmetto Grill were poor. I thought it was a one-time thing since there are lot of cars there when I pass by.
My friends and I went to dinner around 4:30 when there were about three other tables seated, so the lack of attention from the waitress couldn't be blamed on being busy.
My salmon was bland and the sweet potato was microscopic. I've never seen so much white space around food on a plate in a restaurant. My friends' steaks weren't great either. I'd rather go to Outback where I know I'm getting my money's worth.
