Let's Do Lunch: Pete's on Concord

STORY TOOLS

All too often, we don’t go somewhere new or different because we don’t know what to expect. That is where this new feature, “Let’s Do Lunch,” comes in. Each week, we will highlight a different spot for lunch that you can try. We will tell you about prices, atmosphere and anything else you need to know before showing up and chowing down.

And if you have a place we should go, don’t hesitate to drop a line. It’s always lunchtime around here. This week:

Pete’s on Concord

111 Concord Road, Anderson; 864.226.7383

There are times when you just want to plop down in a old-timey feel diner, order a cheeseburger and fries and just eat a quick lunch.

Then, there are those times when you want something a little more exotic and a little off the beaten path.

But if you want both those things in the same place, give a try to Pete’s on Concord in Anderson. They do it all, they do it fast and you get it with a smile and a refill.

Pete’s has been a mainstay in Anderson for more than 50 years, but it’s found a way to change with the times and the tastes of its customers. Many want what they have been eating forever while others opt for something different. That’s why I visited Pete’s: for that something different.

As a sucker for a good gyro (a Greek flatbread dish with rotisserie lamb, lettuce, tomato, onion and a dill yogurt sauce) I went to Pete’s to get a fix. The atmosphere is like an old diner and if you don’t have a huge group, grab a seat at the counter.

Check the menu that has burgers, chicken, cheese sticks and gyros, among others, and then order a plate. That comes with fries and slaw and it’s all to you in about seven minutes. Even at noon, they fly through the orders and get you in and out, if that’s what you want.

A gyro, fries, slaw and a water cost less than six bucks and the rest of the menu is pretty much within that price range. They take Visa and Master Card and you pay at the register, not at your seat. And if you order a tea or water, they practically insist you get a to-go cup refill before you take off.

Not a bad way to spend a lunch hour — or 20 minutes if that’s all you’ve got.
