GREENVILLE, S.C. It didn’t take long for Upstaters to get a glimpse of their own backyard in the new film “Leatherheads” in a special screening of the movie in Greenville Wednesday night before the nationwide debut on April 4.
The romantic comedy starring George Clooney, Renee Zellweger and John Krasinski was filmed all over the Upstate — including Anderson, Boiling Springs, Greenville and Greer — in February and March 2007.
Andersonian Zack Kay was one of the first to get screen time, though obscured by the half-dozen or so people tackling him, in a field during a football game in the film’s opening moments. He was also prominent in the first few scenes of the Duluth Bulldogs travelling from game to game by train.
As most of the Anderson scenes were shot indoors, it was sometimes difficult to tell when the characters might be in the Calhoun Historic Lofts or driving down a back road known only to Anderson natives. But they did come up, and the residents of town who recognize them will be rewarded.
Obvious landmarks included the Westin Poinsett Hotel being turned into the meeting point for Mr. Clooney’s “Dodge” Connelly and Mr. Krasinski’s Carter Rutherford. Less obvious Upstate sightings came when during a montage of the Bulldogs getting back together after having to fold, one of the players ran off a farm. Nothing spectacular, unless the viewer knows the tractor is being driven by an Anderson resident who happened to have an old-time tractor during filming.
Interiors of a speakeasy appeared to be the Calhoun, but that could just as easily be wishful thinking. No doubt many an Anderson moviegoer will think they are in the background of a scene or saw one being filmed.
Oh, and Mr. Clooney and Ms. Zellweger surprised everyone by showing up before the show Wednesday just to say “thanks” to a community that was instrumental in making “Leatherheads” happen.

I wouldn't give George Clooney the right time of day.
