The future of the South Coast League of Professional Baseball could be determined today, and no one is more interested in finding out what the future holds than Reggie Harris.
Harris was hired as the new manager of the Anderson Joes earlier this month but is concerned that the league could fold — ending his tenure before it ever starts.
“I’ve heard the same things that a lot of people have heard, that the league won’t be back,” said Harris. “I haven’t heard anything official yet, but hopefully I’ll know something (today).”
SCL chief executive officer Jamie Toole resigned Tuesday, leaving day-to-day operations to chief development officer J.D. Hardin. Hardin said there are plans to make an official announcement today.
“I hope to have something regarding the short-term and long-term future for the league released (today),” Hardin said Thursday. “And as I know you know, rumors are rumors until we confirm or deny them. I hope I can do that on Friday.”
Down to four teams, the SCL is still mired in debt from 2007. Luther Williams Field, home of the Macon Music, has had its water and electricity turned off pending back payment from the league.
All remaining franchises have financial issues that have yet to be resolved, and the question seems to be whether or not the league can secure an infusion of money to pay off the 2007 debts and pay as it goes in 2008.
The Ferro Investment Group of Joliet, Ill., serves as the primary backers of the league.
“This is tough for everybody,” Harris said. “I was looking forward to coming to Anderson because I’d heard a lot of good things about it, and I thought we could field a competitive team. I didn’t really know all of the financial stuff that went on last season, but of course I’ve heard all about it now.
“We all just need to know something.”
Harris is the third manager hired by the Joes organization, following Desi Wilson and Kash Beauchamp. Last season Harris, 39, was pitching coach for the Rockford RiverHawks of the established Frontier League.
In a story that appeared in the Macon Telegraph Wednesday, Toole was quoted as saying Harris was already looking at other job opportunities.
“Reggie, this is his first year in independent baseball, and I think he’s heard some things from previous people who were involved with the league, and he’s out there trying to see if there’s another league on more solid footing,” Toole said.
The Virginia native, who is remaining in his home state until the fate of the SCL is determined, said that isn’t the case.
“I haven’t looked that far ahead because I wanted to see what was going on with this league,” Harris said. “It’s too late to find something now anyway because most baseball jobs have already been filled. I’ve been out of the loop about everything but obviously I’m in a tough spot.
“Everybody in the SCL is in a tough spot until we finally know what’s going to happen.”
