Staples, Dick’s Sporting Goods to locate on Clemson Boulevard

— The rumor mills can rest. After much speculation, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Staples have filed permits to build stores adjacent to Kohl’s in a new shopping center under construction on Clemson Boulevard.

According to the permits, Dick’s will be in a $3.42 million, 52,000-square-foot store at 140 Fritz Drive. Staples will occupy an $11.24 million, 19,981-square-foot store.

Mike Black, a spokesman for the office supply chain, said Staples’ store is actually expected be about 20,390 square feet, the company’s standard store size. Staples will carry 7,000 products and include a copy and print center as well as in-store technology consultants.

“We’re really excited to bring Staples to Anderson,” Black said.

Staples looks for areas with a thriving small business community, but Anderson also is a fast growing community, which makes it a good market for the office supply chain. Black said Staples will employ about 30 full and part-time workers and should be open in early 2009.

The shopping center is slated to be complete sometime this year. RealtyLink, the Greenville-based developers behind the project, have said they also plan to locate a fast-food chain and coffee shop on two outparcels at the front of the property.

Take that County Council. Even with Cindy Wilson, Bob Waldrep and the other 2 croonies voting against bringing new jobs and government revenue into the city of Anderson they are coming.

Most of District 1 is made up of City Residents but Mr. Waldrep only cares about the County Residents. He wants the County Residents to pay less for water, guess what City Residents that means he wants you to pay MORE for your water. Do you think the water company can just reduce the County Residents water rates and leave yours the same? Cannot Happen. Mr. Waldrep is against the residents of Anderson and needs to be removed from County Council.

And I bet they're great $6-$7 retail jobs!

Posted by Capt_Leo on May 7, 2008 at 7:52 p.m.

This is excellent news! I prefer doing most of my business with locally-owned stores when possible and feasible, but this will bring SOME jobs, minimally as they will pay, and most likely the bulk of the jobs therein will be figured out into part-time jobs, without benefits or if benefits, they, too will be minimal, but there's a need for retail jobs, as well as other, better-paying jobs.

Additionally, Staples will give consumers here an alternative option to Office Depot. Sometimes, a bit of competition can be a good thing... and in this case, I hope so.

I don't think Staples will survive. Office Max tried to compete with Office Depot and died. Office depot is probably cheaper than Staples but they are not that busy. For electronics we have Circuit City, Best Buy, and Office Depot.

I'm not sure about Dick's either. What we don't want are more vacant buildings (including strip malls) in Anderson.

Posted by Capt_Leo on May 8, 2008 at 8:23 a.m.

Excellent points, Niblits.

But I am going to stay positive on this one. There are some services that Staples offers that are much better than those which Office Depot offers and they do so competitively. When I lived in Spartanburg, I used Staples in Greer pretty regularly since they had better prices on some things than Office Depot has.

Being one that uses office supply products regularly, I welcome the competition.

Likewise, Dick's Sporting Goods has some good stuff. As stated earlier, I prefer to shop locally-owned businesses IF they understand and take advantage of personalized customer service. If they fail in that arena, then I shop price.

Staples provides more technology help and has more products than Office Depot. I'm glad they're coming to Anderson even though I live in GA. It's not that far.

Competition is a good thing and jobs, No matter what they pay are better than no jobs at all. Some people are never satisfied,You remind me of some spoiled rich kids, Alway`s wanting more than you have.Try being satisfied with what GOD thinks you deserve.

My husband is going to love the fact that we are getting a Dick's Sporting Goods. He loves the one in Greenville.
Now we need a TGI Friday's here in Anderson!

i;m just glad that starbucks is moving in there. i can't wait to be able to drive down clemson blvd to have a venti double latte instead of driving to clemson....lol

As 'Urban Sprawl' continues to plague Anderson, we allow, yet, another bunch of 'big-box' stores to build, yet, another couple of concrete buildings only to abandon them in a year or two. Why doesn't the Government of Anderson County stand up and restrict such new buildings. As most of you can see, there are plenty of abandoned buildings on Clemson Blvd. that can be remodeled to suit a new tennant.
And..... as for these high paying jobs........ Keep allowing companies to steal the labor of our good citizens and we have a race to the bottom of the pile!
We are at a very low point here in America. That's why I'm voting for Roger Odachowski on June 10 for SC Senate 4. It's not plain or simple.... It takes hard work! Common Sense? Roger has displayed plenty of 'real' common sense!

Posted by cityslicker on May 9, 2008 at 9:26 a.m.

I will certainly be patronizing Dick's Sporting Goods, and see no reason why they won't make it. Anderson could use a sporting goods store, other than Grady's and their Greedy pricing. Sure, I want to support local businesses, but that local business can't stick their head in the sand and ignore current pricing and market trends, then try to rationalize above market pricing with "good" customer service.

Posted by Capt_Leo on May 9, 2008 at 9:59 a.m.

Excellent point, cityslicker!

I've been to Dick's Sporting Goods in Greenville and will go in there in Anderson when they open. Yes, I prefer dealing with locally-owned businesses, but then, there are times that you have to go to the major chains.

I have a little tackle shop in my garage at my house. I opened it because I enjoy fishing and it makes for a good avocation in between my federal cases. And although you can go to a large retail chain and sometimes find some things at a better price, I would seriously doubt you could get the same fishing and outdoors gear I have anywhere close to my prices at the big chain stores. Sometimes the little shops can surprise you.

I have to agree with you somewhat, since, though I may not mind paying 20¢ more for one small item, I wouldn't pay $100 more for a larger-ticket item just because of good customer service.

As for jobs... as theflash stated... I have to agree. It's better to get SOME jobs into Anderson Co than NO jobs at all.

Finch,

I would certainly hope that you vote for him in the Democratic Primary on June 10th instead of voting for me... I mean, especially since you're being paid as his campaign manager, right?

Oh, wait... you're in Greenville Co, aren't you? Last I checked, Senate 4 is in Anderson, Greenwood and Abbeville Counties and NOT in Greenville Co., or did you move across the river to get him an extra vote?

I meant to also say.....

That how many of you have worked at or have children who work at these types of stores? Sure, 7 dollar an hour jobs aren't great but if you stick a teenager in those positions you keep them off the streets, teach them responsiblity, and instill qualities that make for a good citizen. This in the long run improves the community in many ways.

Quit complaining and start trying to make this a better place, that's what I try to do anyway.

Another excellent point!

Kids need part-time after school jobs, as well and many retail stores, coffee shops, and restaurants help kids by giving them jobs and providing an entry into the workplace and the kids benefit the businesses, too.

And you're right, the kids learn responsibility and after school jobs keep them off the streets.

Kudos to ya. I agree... you can always find something to complain about but nothing productive comes from griping.

Should not be used together in the same sentence.

That's funny

capt,
you make sense in your posts. I don't agree with everything you have posted but at least you make sense. I live in the belton area. I like your articles in the belton paper. And I'm a registered voter. You have my vote in the primary and the regular election.

Posted by pink_rfc on May 11, 2008 at 12:11 a.m.

Capt, is that your place on Belton Hwy? I always see that sign that says Captain Leo's, and was wondering if that's you.

Posted by Capt_Leo on May 11, 2008 at 11:18 a.m.

Thanks, Cheri.

I don't expect everyone to agree with me all the time. If such was the case, then that would cause concern. I just call it as I see it. People always talk about wanting the truth... so with me, at least you know where I'm coming from. I appreciate it and am honored.

pink,

Yep. That's my place. Nothing fancy, just a plain little place where I live and use my garage as my fishing shop and office. I make it a point to be open on Thursdays and Fridays, and sometimes, when I am not in hearings (I have a federal administrative law practice), I'm also open on Wednesdays. So, if you're out this way on a Thu or Fri, stop in and check out my garage and visit. You don't even have to buy anything, LOL.

Who is this Capt. Leo? He talks about trying cases and he is not even a lawyer, where does he practice law? I looked into his newsletters which he says he writes for and i think there are 4 members. Law Practice? Is it in his homeland? Cuba? the American Bar Assoc. has no record of him nor does the SC Lawyers. Plus what is he a Captain of? certainly not the military. I think he has a Captain license for his boat on Lake Hartwell.

Wow! It really is evident why you were TERMINATED from the fire department. Oh well, maybe those worker's comp benefits will kick in soon and you won't be so bitter. Happy Thanksgiving.
