AnMed to sponsor ‘LiveStrong’ program for cancer survivors Tuesday

Anderson urged to go yellow to fight cancer

STORY TOOLS

— Local cancer survivors and their families can “LiveStrong” by “painting the town yellow” on Tuesday.

In an event organized by cancer survivors and health care professionals, participants are invited to wear yellow, eat yellow and think yellow on Tuesday.

“We’ve decorated downtown Anderson and we’re asking local businesses to join us,” said Angie Suttles, LiveStrong Upstate SC Team Leader from Anderson. Suttles is a survivor of both vulva and breast cancer.

The organization has asked businesses to come up with different yellow products and donate 5 percent of their sales to the Lance Armstrong Foundation. For instance, Sullivan’s in downtown will be creating a yellow dessert and a yellow dish, she said.

From 2 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday at the AnMed Health Campus, cancer survivors and their families will be able to participate in all sorts of events like hot air balloon rides, raffles, kids activities and eat everything yellow from lemonade and yellow cake to popcorn and lemon drops.

“Basically, it’s a one day initiative to awareness and funds for the fight against cancer,” she said. “We’re trying to make cancer a national priority.”

Additionally, participants will be able to videotape their personal cancer testimonials to be shown to elected representatives in Washington. The event is one of 600 similar events in 49 states and nine countries.

“LiveStrong” is the catch phrase of cyclist Lance Armstrong, who overcame cancer to win the Tour de France. The Lance Armstrong Foundation, an organization that encourages cancer survivors to live life on their own terms, as well as raise funds and awareness for the fight against cancer, is the event’s sponsor.
