STORY TOOLS

What started as a one-time solo show at Cheeseburger in Paradise in Greenville has become a full-time gig for Tim Hollohan, lead singer of Sullivan’s Roof. When the manager of the restaurant asked Hollohan to return with a full band, he could only respond one way.

“I agreed to come back with my band even though I didn’t have one at the time,” Hollohan said. “So I formed the other guys pretty quickly so I could play that show. We’ve been going strong ever since.”

Sullivan’s Roof has been playing for more than two years now, with Hollohan on vocals and rhythm guitar, Sean Hollohan (Tim’s brother) and Jason “Slim” Hudson on lead guitar, and Robert Gunning V on Bass. The band will play its combination of pop rock, ’70s rock and rap at Wild Wing Cafe on Friday in Anderson.

Sullivan’s Roof plays the Anderson Wild Wing Cafe at least once a month, and Tim is scheduled often as a solo musician. The band actually is spread throughout the state, with Tim and Jason living in Greenville and Robert and Sean in Columbia. This obviously causes a lack of practice, but Tim said the band has played so many shows over the past two years, there is no need for it.

All of the band’s covers are translated acoustically, with some notable covers such as “Hotel California” by the Eagles, “American Pie” by Don McLean, and “Santeria” by Sublime. The band also does a variety of Hootie and the Blowfish covers, such as “Let Her Cry” and “Time,” according to Tim.

“We are also known for doing a great cover of Nate Dogg and Warren G’s ‘Regulators,’” Tim said. “I play acoustic and sing the lyrics while Sean raps. We throw in rap just to goof off, but people really enjoy it.”

Tim said the band has original songs, many of which have their origin in bluegrass. “My Sunshine” and “Jerusalem” both have a bluegrass flavor, according to Tim. He said the bluegrass influence comes from his dad, who was part of a bluegrass/gospel band for years.

“People enjoy our originals, but crowds generally like hearing songs they know,” Tim said. “If we do our originals or songs that are not well known, we make sure we do them particularly well.”

Although Sullivan’s Roof changes its set list often, Tim said the band almost always closes with the same medley for the couples in the crowd. This medley is a combination of “Why Don’t We Get Drunk” and “Sweet Caroline.” He said this medley works well with the late-night bar crowds.

“We heard Jimmy Buffett put those together before, and they work very well,” Tim said. “If you’re sober, it’s funny; if you’re not, it’s very funny.”
