Tigers wait for ACC bid

STORY TOOLS

Now, they wait.

Clemson will play its final regular-season series this weekend, but the Tigers’ fate is entirely out of their hands.

While the Tigers (27-25-1) play a three-game series against Central Florida in Orlando — starting with tonight’s 6:30 p.m. game — the outcome of a pair of ACC series will determine whether their season stretches beyond Saturday night.

Clemson has finished its ACC slate with an 11-18-1 record — currently good enough for eighth-place in the league. Eight teams will qualify for the ACC Tournament May 21-25 in Jacksonville, Fla.

But the Tigers’ ticket to Jacksonville must be punched by events they can’t control. Duke currently sits in ninth place with an 8-17-1 ACC record; the Blue Devils must sweep league cellar-dweller Virginia Tech to knock Clemson out of eighth place. If Tech beats Duke once, though, Clemson will clinch an ACC berth.

If Duke pulls off the sweep, the Tigers must root for Boston College — which hosts seventh-place Wake Forest (11-15). If the Eagles sweep the Demon Deacons, Clemson would finish a half-game ahead of them in the standings, also securing a berth. Both series also run Thursday-Saturday.
