There are times, even in this day and age of counting calories and wacky diets, that you need something you remember. Times you need something comforting and warm to get through a cold, dreary day.

Those are the days you head to Carlee’s Restaurant on North Main Street in Anderson.

Carlee’s is a small meat-and-three style restaurant that rests just off Main Street. In the handful of years it has been open, Carlee’s has impressed the locals who grew up on the family-style restaurant and has become a fixture of the lunch scene in Anderson.

The meat-and-three is a simple concept and Carlee’s does a good job of keeping it that way. You get to choose a meat from their list of about a half-dozen varieties and then you get to choose three sides to go with it. Each day there is something different while mainstays, like fried or baked chicken, are on there each day.

At Carlee’s, their main goal is to get you in, get you your food, give you a great customer service experience and get you back to the rest of your day.

Weekday lunches are busy, but not so much that you don’t get some personal service. On this day, luck was on our side as there was turkey and dressing on the menu. That, along with beef tips and rice, baked chicken and other meats made for a fine menu day for this comfort food fanatic.

Put it together with sides of mac and cheese and mashed potatoes along with a peach cobbler for dessert and life was good — and warm.

Carlee’s does not accept credit cards, however, and it’s a cash or check operation only. The atmosphere is homey and they seat you and bring everything to you. Plus, you can get in and out in about 30 to 40 minutes making it great for a fast lunch or a casual quick one.
