Oconee County trounces Blue Devils

STORY TOOLS

— Fresh off a thrilling comeback home win last week at the expense of Franklin County, the Oconee County Warriors took their high-flying offense on the road to Elberton this week, and continued their winning streak, defeating the Elbert County Blue Devils at the Granite Bowl 38-0.

Senior quarterback Zach Mettenberger, a University of Georgia commitment, ran the Warrior spread attack to perfection, riddling the Devil secondary with three touchdown passes, while junior scatback Jamie Stephens zigged and zagged his way over 100 yards for the evening. On the other side of the ball, the Devils couldn’t generate any consistent ball movement all night, frustrated with the Warriors’ size advantage up front and a speedy back seven.

Mettenberger finished the night hitting on 17 of 28 pass attemts for 183 yards and three touchdowns, and Stephens ran for 122 yards on 20 carries.

Elbert County was led offensively by Ronnie Hughes, who rushed for 49 yards.

Elbert County’s Brent Miller was straight to the point after the game.

“ We felt good after our solid effort last week against Eastside, but tonight we didn’t have any answers. We’re going to get back to work next week.”

Elbert (2-3, 0-2 Region AAA) travels to Madison next week to take on the Bulldogs of Morgan County. Oconee (2-3, 2-0 Region AAA) journeys to Toccoa to take on the tough Stephens County Indians.
