Coaches who have combined for more than 400 wins in their careers — and 300 at their current schoools — will meet this week at Westside.
Greenwood coach Shell Dula is 249-141-1 in 32 years as a head coach. Westside coach Ted Luckadoo is 199-160-3 in 31 years. Aside from longevity, and being widely regarded as the deans of the prep football coaching profession in the state, they share a common goal this week: trying to jump start their 2-4 teams as Region 1-AAAA play begins.
“You know what to expect every year,” Luckadoo said of Dula’s teams. “They fly around the football. They always have an outstanding offensive threat.”
This year’s threat for the Eagles didn’t materialize until last week at West Florence. D.J. Swearinger, who has committed to Tennessee, got his first start at quarterback last week in the 17-10 win over the Knights. Swearinger, who also plays defensive back, started at running back and receiver earlier in the season.
Swearinger accounted for 149 rushing yards last week and touchdowns runs of 24 and 89 yards.
Contrasting Swearinger with last week’s Westside opponent, Clover, and its misdirection Wing-T offense, and the Rams are getting used to preparing for the run.
“The good thing about it is we know where he’s going to be every play,” Luckadoo said. “We know where he’s going to start out. We’ve got to account for him and the other running back, but he’s the one you’ve got to stop, because I think he’s the one that’s going to make the big plays.”
If there’s an area that Westside’s looking to exploit, it’s Greenwood’s special teams.
When their offense hasn’t sputtered, the Eagles have struggled with special teams coverage.
