Upstate S.C. waterfall hikes planned this fall

STORY TOOLS

— Upstate South Carolina residents have five more reasons to take a hike this fall. Palmetto Conservation Foundation plans the Duke Energy Waterfall Trek Series October to December.

The series consist of five hikes to five different waterfalls that are featured in “The Waterfalls of South Carolina, Third Edition.”

The hikes will be led by Alvin Feltman and will include commentary on the surrounding flora and fauna, and some history when applicable. Feltman retired from the US Forest Service where he served as an assistant Forest Ranger and now works as a Forestry consultant.

Three of the hikes will be in Oconee County, where many of the waterfalls in the state are found, one in Pickens County and one in Greenville County. The hikes are free. They are:

— Oct. 16, King Creek Falls in Oconee County (70 feet) a moderate 1-mile hike that will be combined with Spoonauger Falls (50 feet) an easy hike nearby.

— Oct. 23, Lee Falls in Oconee County (75 feet) a difficult hike of approximately 3 miles.— Nov. 1, Reedy Branch Falls in Oconee County (30 feet) an easy ½ mile hike. — Nov. 29, Green Creek Falls in Pickens County (30 feet) a moderate hike of about 1 mile. There is a $2 entrance fee into Table Rock State Park. — Dec. 6, Raven Cliff Falls in Greenville County (400 feet) a moderate 5.4 mile hike. This fall qualifies for postcard status with two breathtaking views.
