Col. Joey R. Preston, who also is Anderson County administrator, was inducted into the Order of Saint Barbara on Sept. 16.
The order is an honorary military society of the United States Air Defense Artillery and Field Artillery in the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps. Preston serves as an Adjutant for the Joint Services Detachment and assists in Governmental Directorate Affairs, including the Regiment Scholarship Family Care Association and the Youth Challenge project.
The Order of Saint Barbara recognizes individuals who have demonstrated the highest standards of integrity and character; displayed an outstanding degree of professional competence; served Field Artillery with selflessness; and contributed to the promotion of the Field Artillery in ways that stand out in the eyes of the recipient’s seniors, subordinates and peers.
The ceremony took place during the JSD Drill at the Joint Forces Headquarters in Columbia.

This has to be a joke. Right?
What an embarrassment to all those who have really served our country with dignity.
Yankeefann,
Why is it so hard to let Mr. Preston receive an award? This award is explained: "The Order of Saint Barbara is an honorary military society of the United States Field Artillery. Both U.S. Marine and Army field artillery along with their military and civilian supporters are eligible for membership. The order is managed by the U.S. Field Artillery Association and two levels of recognition exist. The most distinguished level is the Ancient Order of Saint Barbara and those who are selected for this honor have achieved long-term, exceptional service to the field artillery surpassing even their brethren in the Honorable Order of Saint Barbara. The order links field artillerymen of the past and present in a brotherhood of professionalism, selfless service and sacrifice symbolized by Saint Barbara." Source is sill-www.army.mil/pao/pabarbar.htm . Honestly!
I am sending Mr. Preston CONGRATULATIONS!
Now "The Order of Saint Barbara" has been cheapened so that for any other human to receive the "award" it would be a slap in their face.
When you can purchase any award then the "award" becomes completely without worth.
Too bad all of us can't use county funds to buy all these worthless "awards". I hope someone in the world is impressed with these "internet" awards so PRESTO can find employment elsewhere.
If anything he should receive "The Order of Saint Barbara Streisand" award for the spread of hype w/o substance.

County funds to buy these awards? Preston serves in the Joint Services Detachment in the National Guard. You think this has anything to do with the Anderson County Budget?
I've said before Preston isn't the most forthright administrator, but he does a great job. He should allow more transparency. I concede that. Y'all folks that constantly bash Preston offer no concessions. Preston has obviously done good things for Anderson.
Y'all spew out nonsense usually like what you just said. Preston serves in the National Guard and he was awarded for his service.
To say he bought this award with county funds is absurd.
It makes you sound like a complete idiot, which judging from your and your 'yankeefan' friend's comments might not be so hard to believe.
OK - get real. The man serves his state and his nation freely of his own choice. He could stay home and enjoy time. This is called service.
Like him as a person or not, you are insulting EVERY PERSON IN UNIFORM when you indicate that volunteering to serve is less than honorable.
I am the parent of a member of the guard. I would prefer my child home. But to demean that service would be a slap in the face of all my family who have served. At least he is not going to Canada to avoid the draft as many did in the 60s.
Congratulations Mr. Prestion

If you have been following these threads long, you would recognize dwhit29689 is speaking of the awards that have been bragged about which came from organizations we had to pay for memberships, we had to apply for the awards and there were fees and such to get these awards. That is what he was referring to as awards "bought with county money." You went off on dwhit29689 pretty deep for such a simple issue.
All this talk about slapping servicemen and insulting every person in uniform and such is real overreach in trying to garner support for Preston. It's like playing the race card when no one has eyes. Cheap theatrics.
After finding how much of what Preston does and gets praise for is orchestrated, it kinda takes the wind out of what we hear from that point forward. This group of "privately funded" lobbyists promoting the east-west connector scare me. Their style of marketing is the perfect example of the Preston formula previously described by Nick Charalambous.
"First, craft a spending plan that invests in the basic services and infrastructure that few people can disagree with and add enough projects spread across the county to keep hypocritical elected officials and their constituents happy."

Read the whole article, the resemblance to the current situation is remarkable.

Although I don't know, the webpage of the organization does reveal some interesting followup.

It looks as though induction into this "Honorable Order of Saint Barbara" is by application.
Hmm!
Funny....when the truth came out all of the Prestonites disappeared back into the woodwork just like cockroaches do when the lights are turned on. Preston wants to really serve.....then let him take his butt to Iraq or Afghanistan. Until then he needs to quit buying all these awards with MY money.
