Injury ends Middleton's record-setting career

STORY TOOLS

For the first time in 32 games, Walhalla (3-4, 1-1) will start a new quarterback this week at Crescent.

Senior Rob Middleton, who owns every major school passing record, broke a bone in his lower left leg on an option play in the second quarter of last week’s 35-7 loss to Abbeville.

Middleton holds single game records in completions (33), attempts (47), yards (508), and touchdowns (5). Middleton is also the program leader in season marks for completions (166), attempts (826), yards (2,777), and TDs (27). And he is the career leader in all of those categories: completions (428), attempts (826), yards (6,131), and TDs 57.

Middleton completed 10-of-11 passes against Abbeville for 133 yards and a touchdown. On the season, Middleton was second in the area among quarterbacks by completing 77-of-144 passes for 1,171 yards, 13 touchdowns and four interceptions.

Juniors Lane Rochester and John Sharpe both played quarterback against Abbeville. Boggs said after the game that he wasn’t sure who would start at Crescent. Sharpe leads the team with 29 catches for 394 yards and five touchdowns. He’s also rushed for 161 yards and three touchdowns on 35 carries.

Walhalla also received positive injury news over the weekend when senior receiver Nick Tubbs was diagnosed with a separated shoulder, and not a broken collarbone. Tubbs, who has 24 receptions for 221 yards and two touchdowns, is 124 yards away from the school’s career receiving yards record.
