Anderson men's soccer team rolling

STORY TOOLS

Winning has become a habit for the Anderson University men’s soccer team, which is mere percentage points from the top spot in Conference Carolinas. Yet when the season started at 2-3, Trojans coach Rob Miller wasn’t sure which direction his club was headed.

“Early on was the time we were struggling,” Miller said. “That’s when we were still trying to figure things out.”

A squad that features just four senior starters and several international players has finally meshed, and currently AU sports an 8-3-2 overall record and 5-0-2 mark in the league. The Trojans haven’t lost since a 2-1 overtime setback to Clayton State Sept. 6, and they are currently riding the wave of an eight-match unbeaten streak with the last five victories.

The most recent conquest came Wednesday night when the Trojans downed Erskine, 2-0.

“At first it was a matter of integrating new players and figuring out where they were going to play,” Miller said. “And one issue was having our international players adjust to the South Carolina heat. But after we had two draws in a row we started winning, and we’ve been on a little bit of a roll.”

Freshman Lasse Sohrweide of Germany has been the go-to guy in Anderson’s 4-5-1 attack, and leads the team with nine goals. In the win over the Flying Fleet Sohrweide scored both of the Trojans’ goals.

Kevin Valkenburg has tallied five goals, while Zach Denson has been solid in a setup roll with eight assists.

“It’s an exciting style for us and Lasse has really done a great job,” Miller said. “He’s second in the league in scoring and we have several other guys who are also threats.”

The Trojans have also been solid defensively, despite having two sophomore goalkeepers.

Benjamin Pepion has come on strong between the pipes, with a 0.83 goals against average in seven appearances.

Chris Skelton, another second year player, has played in seven games and has averaged yielding 1.06 goals.

“It’s scary sometimes to think you have sophomores back there, but then again it’s a good thing because you know they’ll be battling each other for two more years,” Miller said. “But one of the keys for us is we have a lot of young players, but we also have a lot of talent. And we have depth, which is really important.”

Anderson returns to action Saturday when Coker (4-9-2, 1-5-1) comes to Smethers Field with kickoff set for 3 p.m.

The matchup with league-leading Lees-McRae (12-2-1, 6-0-1) takes place on the road Oct. 25.
