CLEMSON Clemson junior defensive tackle Jamie Cumbie confirmed Internet rumors of a heated post-game argument with defensive coordinator Vic Koenning which left him stranded at the Georgia Dome following the Tigers’ 34-10 loss to Alabama Saturday night, but said he has repaired the relationship and is ready to move on with the season.
“I was arguing and stuff. There were things said that I apologized for,” he said. “I shouldn’t have reacted that way. Things happen. Tempers heat up, especially after a big game,” he said. “I apologized for doing what I did. I can’t do anything about it now. It’s in the past.”
This week, Internet rumors surfaced regarding a confrontation. Clemson coach Tommy Bowden declined to talk about the matter, saying that any such incident would have been a private team matter had it happened.
Koenning acknowledged the issue Tuesday afternoon during his usual meeting with Clemson beat reporters.
“I think that has been resolved,” he said. “That’s about all I can say on that. It’s unfortunate that anything was made out of it. Guys get emotional, but you have to have certain guidelines. That’s the way it goes.”
Cumbie admitted Tuesday that he wasn’t happy about coming off the bench Saturday night. Sophomore Jarvis Jenkins started, making no tackles in 34 snaps. Cumbie made three tackles in 39 snaps.
“I feel that I should be starting. I think my performance and stuff (prove it),” he said. “And I’m not hitting on anybody because Jarvis and everybody did well,” he said. “I’m going to keep doing what I do. I’m going to keep on making plays and it will decide itself.”
Following the game, Cumbie said he and Koenning had an “altercation, just a little miscommunication,” and he got off one of the team buses. Moments later, standing at the back of the family section inside the Dome, he watched the buses drive off.
“I guess they thought I was on one of the buses,” he said. “I wasn’t. That’s all it was.”
Luckily, Cumbie’s high school coach was in attendance, and about 30 minutes later, his parents (who had been at the game and were staying in a downtown hotel) arrived to pick him up and take him back to Clemson.
Cumbie said he felt “a mixture” of hurt, fear and anger. He has met with Koenning and Tommy Bowden about the issue and considers it in the past.
“There’s a long season ahead of us,” he said. “I won’t let this deal jeopardize our season. We’ll just go up from here.”
INJURY UPDATE
Starting right guard Barry Humphries will miss at least 4-6 weeks following knee surgery Tuesday, Clemson officials confirmed. The Belton-Honea Path product was injured 19 plays into Saturday’s game after being leg-whipped by an Alabama player. Redshirt freshman Mason Cloy will start in his place this week. Starting bandit end Ricky Sapp will have an MRI today to examine what is officially being called a bruised right knee. Sapp said the knee has swelling (although X-rays were negative) and he went through two rounds of treatment Tuesday in the training room. He was limited to conditioning work at Tuesday’s practice and said he “might try to run” today. He said it remains “too early to tell” if he’ll play Saturday against The Citadel.

Blah, blah, blah. That is all we hear out of the All Complain Conference. It's always Tommy's fault. Start that famous chant, you know the one, it's the only one y'all have know; "FIRE THE COACH, BRING BACK DANNY FORD!" If y'all want clemson to get better, keep your coach, dump the acc, and join a REAL Conference.
When I saw Tommie making his comments after the game looked like he had his tail tucked between his legs. I bet they didn't have much to say when Tommie had a word with them.
