All too often, we don’t go somewhere new or different because we don’t know what to expect. That is where this feature, “Let’s Do Lunch,” comes in. Each week, we will highlight a different spot for lunch that you can try. We will tell you about prices, atmosphere and anything else you need to know before showing up and chowing down.
And if you have a place we should go, don’t hesitate to drop a line. It’s always lunchtime around here.
Papa Duke’s Bar and Grille
2704 N. Main St., Anderson; 864.328.9427
Hours: Kitchen — 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday; 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday
Because his place is one of the newest additions to the Anderson restaurant scene, Papa Duke’s owner Derek Ward knows he has to catch people’s attention. After all, there are plenty of choices for the choosy diner, and he can go just about anywhere and get just about anything.
Papa Duke’s is a new restaurant and bar located across the street from Brooklyn Place and in the same building as Planet Comics in Anderson. It’s only been open a couple months, but in that time, it has garnered new regulars and put together a lunch menu that should fit any palette.
The menu is fairly straightforward. Papa Duke’s has burgers, salads, hot dogs, Philly cheesesteaks, club sandwiches, fries, chicken wings and a great deal more. It’s pretty much pub-style food, but the atmosphere of Papa Duke’s is meant to be a pub and sports theme.
Lunchtime was pretty quiet around noon on Thursday, and the food came out hot, on time and with good conversation from the waitress and the owner himself. The Rueben was great, and the onion rings they have are “Black and Tan” style with a hint of stout beer flavor infused in the batter. The Philly cheesesteak is just what a cheesesteak should be: meaty, cheesy and filled with onions and peppers. And the fries are fresh cut.
Papa Duke’s has put together a lunch special menu with about seven items, including drink, for about $6 each. Add to that his wing special (24 wings and a pitcher of beer for $13) and you can grab lunch in between work or on your day off.
The place is cozy but worth a quick trip for a speedy lunch or a spot to take friends for a longer conversation.
