Greenville authorities seeking identity of body found in Piedmont quarry

— It could be next week before Greenville County authorities determine the direction taken by an investigation that began when a man’s body was found in a Piedmont rock quarry.

“It’s too early to say if it’s suspicious or an accident,” said Master Deputy Michael Hildebrand, spokesman for the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office.

Workers at the Vulcan Materials rock quarry found the body about 10 a.m. Wednesday about 60 feet from a road that leads into the 250-foot deep quarry, which is fenced and gated, he said The body is believed to have been in the quarry for about 4 days, Hildebrand said.

An autopsy was conducted today by the Greenville County Coroner’s Office to determine the cause of death and the man’s identify, Hildebrand said. A spokesperson at the coroner’s office could not immediately be reached for comment.
