Thieves make off with Sheriff’s Office copper in Anderson

STORY TOOLS

— Copper thieves have now struck the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office.

Sometime on Thursday, thieves stole the copper tubing from the Sheriff’s Office tower on U.S. 29 North.

Before the county’s current 800 MHz system was set up, said Anderson County Director of Emergency Management Services Taylor Jones, the theft would have meant dispatchers calling deputies on cell phone.

“Basically, the old VHS system, has a single point of failure. … When you lose that capability, you completely lose communications,” Jones said. “Before we had the 800 MHz system, we would have been completely off the air. The good thing about having the 800 MHz system is that we have a back-up system.”

Technicians were on the scene replacing cable on Thursday, and the VHS capability was expected to be back up by Friday morning, Jones said.
