Anderson bank teller foils forged check spree

STORY TOOLS

— An alert bank teller might have saved an Anderson man a good deal of money when another man attempted to cash a forged check, one of 10 stolen.

W.J. Durham told Anderson Municipal Court Judge Ken Mattison Friday that the checks had been stolen from his checkbook that was left in his office at Electrolux.

Around 10 a.m. Thursday, Anderson police arrested William Hudgens, 31, when he presented a $3,800 check at the Bank of Anderson on East Greenville Street. Durham’s name had been forged on the check.

So far, police have recovered checks written for $3,850, $4,850 and $800, according to Durham’s testimony. A fourth check for $500 was cashed, he said. Six more checks are missing, Durham said in court.

Summer Harrington, 21, who had been living with Hudgens in a car, also was arrested, according to Officer Donald Hodges Jr.

During the court hearing, Harrington was allowed to apply for pretrial intervention on a charge of receiving a stolen check. She also faces trial in general sessions court for forgery and conspiracy.

Hudgens, who pleaded guilty to two counts of receiving stolen checks, was ordered to pay fines of $2,185 or spend 60 days in jail, and he faces trial in general sessions court on two counts of forgery and conspiracy.
