ANDERSON The charge for a Columbia man’s at one point free trip in an Anderson cab grew to $700 Friday when an Anderson judge ordered $230 restitution in addition to a $470 fine for failure to pay a cab fare.
The driver for Yellow Cab Company said in Anderson Municipal Court Friday that he lied to his manager about taking his fare on a one-way trip to Columbia.
The driver, who was not identified, told Judge Ken Mattison that he believed Bryan Clifton, 28, of West Columbia had the money at his home, took him at his word and lied to his manager to receive the fare and a promised $100 tip.
Clifton pleaded guilty Wednesday to failing to pay a cab fare and was ordered to pay the $470 fine or spend 30 days in jail.
A restitution hearing for the fare took place Friday.
Clifton told Mattison that his parents had given him a check for $600 to stay at a house in Anderson. After one day, Clifton was evicted and hailed the cab Sunday on Shockley Ferry Road. He failed to pay upon arrival in Columbia.
The cab manager told Mattison that Clifton owed $460 — or $230 to Columbia and $230 for a return trip to Anderson — after Columbia police said the crime was committed in Anderson, and the driver and Clifton returned to Anderson.
Mattison disagreed, saying the fare was to Columbia, and the return of Clifton to Anderson was not Clifton’s financial responsibility.
And Mattison offered the driver a tip: “Don’t lie to your boss, and get the money before you start.”
