Daniel Lafontaine, assistant director of the Clemson University Livestock and Poultry Health Division, recently received the 2008 American Veterinary Medical Association Public Service Award.
Lafontaine is the director of the South Carolina Meat and Poultry Inspection unit of the livestock and poultry health division. The unit protects consumers by assuring that meat and poultry products are safe, wholesome and accurately labeled. Lafontaine has also served on the South Carolina Interagency Food Safety Council and Food Safety Lawa Subcommittee of the South Carolina State Bioterrorism Advisory Committte. He organized the first Food Defense Exercise in South Carolina in 2006. He serves on the State Animal Response Team.
Lafontaine also initiated the Regulation through Education program in the South Carolina Meat and Poultry Inspection Department. It was later adapted as a new outreach initiative by the United States Department of Agriculture Food and Safety Inspection Service.
