I discovered Pendleton in 1961, when I arrived to begin my position at Clemson University. I was impressed by the town square and the town’s sense of place as a community.
In 1964, my wife, Peggy, and I and our daughters moved to our present home two blocks from the square.
The leadership of Mayors Gossett, Sloan, Davenport, Durham and Burdette made Pendleton a great place to raise a family.
I now enthusiastically recommend the re-election of Mayor Burdette. Carol is a creative and productive force, extending herself beyond Pendleton to Anderson County, our state and across the Atlantic to Scotland, the birthplace of many of our ancestors.
Mayor Burdette is a bridge builder in our town of great diversity.
She represents all segments of our town, providing the varied, necessary services. While working in my shop, I hear trucks picking up trash, recyclables and brush. The town employees are so efficient I could set my clock by them and are so friendly that I enjoy meeting them on Duke Street.
I have met Mayor Burdette’s challenger, Randy Hayes, and I applaud him for his interest in public service. I encourage him to establish a knowledge of and a foundation in the workings of local government by considering a future position on our town council.
When I retired, my friends thought we’d be off to other pastures. No way. Pendleton is truly our home and a fine place to live with Carol Burdette as our friend and mayor.
