Sinead Haughey didn’t even want to know her time, even though she finished before anyone else.

And that didn’t bother her.

The D.W. Daniel junior treated Saturday morning’s Electric City Cross County Classic as a “workout,” but she still finished the 5-kilometers in 20:11 to win the event, 46 seconds ahead of Wren’s Alex Dixon. Running in humid and muddy conditions at the Anderson Sports and Entertainment Center, Haughey led three Daniel girls who finished in the top four.

“I honestly don’t even know what my time was, and I’m not really sure I want to,” Haughey said. “I’m not going to focus on the times right now.”

Haughey’s finish, combined with senior Allison Droddy’s third place time in 21:11, and eighth grader Elizabeth Dawson, who finished fourth in 21:16, helped Daniel win the event with 31 points. Second-place Wade Hampton had 74, and Wren came in third with 97.

“It does take the whole team, and we have a pretty strong top five,” Daniel coach Brock Bailey said.

But it helps to have Haughey, who finished fifth at the state meet last year.

“She’ll be competing for the state title (this year),” Bailey said. “She’ll be right there in the mix. That’s where we expect her to be.”

Haughey said she’s still trying to get her legs under her, and she’s hoping to be ready for an invitational event in Charlotte, N.C. in two weeks.

Wade Hampton’s depth showed on the boys side as the top two Generals finished sixth and seventh, the team’s only two runners in the top 10.

Kyle Koby and Aaron Ramirez, both from Woodmont, finished first and second in the boys individual race, in 16:48 and 16:49.

While the Daniel girls ease into the season, the Lady Lions continue to reveal their depth of runners, as Bailey said two of his potential top seven runners are injured.

Bailey said Daniel has 11 runners who compete for the top seven spots, which helps practice.
