Destinee Johnson, a student at Westside High School in Anderson, is one of only 45 seniors in South Carolina to be named a semifinalist in the 46th Annual National Achievement Scholarship competition.
Nationally, only 1,300 students were named semifinalists.
Semifinalists will compete for approximately 800 scholarships worth more than $2.6 million to be awarded next spring.
The competition, open to more than 160,000 black high school juniors across the country, looks at 2008 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test scores, skills, abilities, accomplishments and potential for success in rigorous college studies. Finalists win corporate scholarships worth up to $2,500 each.
Winners will be announced in April.
